The innings was brought back on track by Jonny Bairstow (37) and Joe Root (29) after they added 61 runs for the fourth wicket. However, their stay at the crease was ended by Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. Ben Stokes tried to hit a take on the Indian bowlers and hit 6 fours and three sixes during his 70-run knock from 88 balls.

The Indian bowlers proved to be too much for England, as the visitors were wrapped up for 246 runs. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin shared 6 wickets amongst them whereas Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah picked up 2 wickets each.

India ended Day 1 at 119/1 wherein, Yashasvi Jaiswal (76*) and Shubman Gill (14*) are present at the crease.
