Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB)  appointed former player Noor-ul-Haq Malekzai as the chief selector of the senior national cricket team. The 29-year-old was in the role on a temporary basis for more than three months until the ACB on Monday named him on a permanent basis.

Noor played just two One-Day International matches for Afghanistan national team in his brief international career in 2010. However, he played 18 First-Class matches, 13 List A and eight T20 games at the domestic level.

Noor-ul-Haq Malekzai has had quite an impressive tenure: Naseeb Khan

ACB CEO Naseeb Khan congratulated Noor for his appointment as the chief selector and said his tentative period as an acting chief selector was impressive.

“Malekzai has had quite an impressive tenure as the acting chief selector and has shown great spirit during the selection of the teams for the U19 Asia Cup & World Cup as well as for our recent squad selections for the Netherlands and Bangladesh series.

“I would like to congratulate him and wish him all the very best for the future,” the CEO said in a statement.

Noor said that Afghanistan has an abundance of talent at its disposal and the job of the selectors is to provide individuals with appropriate opportunities. The chief selector also mentioned that ACB will plan a strategy for the long-term goals of Afghanistan cricket.

“We have a busy 2022 year ahead and as a team, we will be working on to not only address our short-term needs but also achieve our long-term goals. We have enormous talent in the country and it is important that they are provided with proper opportunities,” Noor said, as reported by ESPNCricinfo.

Afghanistan is scheduled to play three ODI matches and a couple of T20 International fixtures against Bangladesh in their backyard. The tour commences on Wednesday with the first ODI to be played at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.
