Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa admitted that he deliberately ditched the Rajasthan Royals and pulled out of IPL 2024 to prepare for the T20 World Cup 2024.
Adam Zampa, who was retained by the Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2024 IPL auction in Dubai, had taken himself back from the edition, citing personal reasons. At first, it seemed like Zampa's absence could pose a threat to Rajasthan's Indian Premier League season.
However, thanks to the presence of Ravi Ashwin and Yuzi Chahal, the 2008 champions secured a top 4 finish with 17 points.
It was Rajasthan's 2nd IPL playoff appearance in 3 seasons but they were quite unfortunate to not have qualified for the final. RR had lost to eventual runners-up SunRisers Hyderabad in the 2nd Qualifier at the MA Chidambaram stadium in the most dramatic fashion.
Nonetheless, they would have been satisfied with the finish they had, especially after a poor 2nd half of the season.
Adam Zampa says his decision to pull out from IPL 2024 was the 'best thing'
Adam Zampa, who made his Indian Premier League debut in 2016, admitted that his decision to not feature in the 2024 season was the best thing for him.
Zampa feels that he made a very good decision by not flying over to India as he had some fitness as well as injury issues. Before the IPL, the leg-spinner had gone through a very hectic period of 6 months from September to October.
Adam Zampa had featured in every single game for Australia in those months. It had started with an away ODI series in South Africa in September before flying over to India for a preparatory ODI series and winning the 50-over World Cup 2023 in November.
He then stayed in the country for another month to play in the 5-match T20I series and then feature in T20I series against West Indies and New Zealand. Therefore, Adam Zampa found the IPL 2024 months as the best time to disconnect from cricket to focus on his fitness and prepare for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Another major reason why Adam Zampa did not play IPL was that he wanted to spend some time with his family as he had been away for 6 months.
"Yeah, obviously made that decision a little while ago to pull out of the IPL and I thought it was the best thing for me moving forward into this World Cup. I was tired, I had some niggles and I'm a family man as well, so trying to put them first over work sometimes is pretty important." - Zampa said yesterday in Barbados after Australia defeated England.
Zampa derails England's title defense hopes with a terrific MOTM performance
Yesterday at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, Adam Zampa derailed England's title defense hopes thanks to his wonderful leg-spin spell of 4 overs. The Aussies had anyway put a lot of pressure on Jos Buttler's side by piling up 200 runs in the 1st innings and Zampa made matters even worse.
The reigning champions were restricted to just 165 and lost to Australia for the very first time at an ICC T20 World Cup edition. Adam Zampa played a crucial role with his efficient 2/28 which helped him win the Man of the Match award as well.
