Australia spinner Adam Zampa could not stop himself from taking a dig at former captain Michael Clarke after his team’s triumphant campaign in the recently-concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

The former Australia captain had written of his country’s chances in the World Cup after the poor start to the campaign. The Pat Cummins-led side began their campaign with two heavy defeats. They suffered a six-wicket loss against hosts India before being thrashed by 134 runs by South Africa.

Not many had given Australia a chance of advancing ahead of the league stage let alone winning the tournament. However, the team from Down Under defied all the odds and won seven games in a row to storm into the semifinals. In their last two games, they beat South Africa and India to end their campaign in a fitting manner.

Adam Zampa takes a dig at Michael Clarke:

After Australia’s loss in the first two games, Michael Clarke had written off their chances. He had predicted that Australia would struggle against the likes of Sri Lanka and Pakistan in spinning conditions. He had gone on to say that Australia could come out as laughable against subcontinental teams.

“I’m not saying our World Cup is over. We could still qualify with two losses, but Sri Lanka are going to be tough in those conditions. We haven’t played Pakistan yet,” Clarke told Sky Sports Radio at the time.

“We’ve got some really tough cricket ahead of us and if we play like this, we are not qualifying. I’m more worried about the subcontinent teams. If we are getting shown up like that against South Africa, with the spin in the sub-continent teams … we will be laughable.

“If we’re not careful the conversation we’ve been having for the last three weeks about the Wallabies [at the Rugby World Cup], in two weeks time we’ll be having that about Australian cricket,” he added.

More than a month after Clarke’s statement, Adam Zampa has shown that he has got a good and long memory, After proving Clarke wrong, the Australia spin spearhead took to Instagram to mock his comments. The leg-spinner quoted Clarke in part, followed by a series of laughing emojis and then an orange love heart.

It was not all from Adam Zampa as he followed it up with another post showing him wearing a World Cup winner’s medal with a caption: “1 spinner 1 winner”. It was in relation to critics’ claims that picking just one spinner was a mistake by Australia.
