Australia spinner Adam Zampa is still doubtful for the second ODI of the series against Pakistan. He missed the first ODI of the series with a neck spasm.
Reportedly, Zampa was in training on Monday, but did not look fully fit to play in the match on Tuesday. The first ODI was played on Saturday and Pakistan won by 5 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Arafat Minhas leads Pakistan to win
Debutant left-arm spinner Arafat Minhas headlined Pakistan's victory over Australia on Saturday in Rawalpindi.
Fifties from Matthew Short and Matt Renshaw were of no help as Minhas's 5/32 sank Australia to a total of 200 all-out. Abrar Ahmed, too, chipped in with two wickets and some restrictive bowling. Arafat Minhas became the first Pakistani player to take a five-wicket haul on ODI debut.
On a surface with turn, Pakistan's bowlers did well to keep the batters tied down. Of the six bowlers used by Pakistan, five took wickets, and only one conceded at an economy rate of more than 4.64 runs per over.
Pakistan's response was measured. Babar Azam top-scored with 69, while Ghazi Ghori provided support with 65. As fate would have it, Minhas scored the winning runs as well.
Adam Zampa uncertain for 2nd ODI
Adam Zampa missed the first ODI in Rawalpindi with a neck spasm. According to reports, he is not likely to play in the 2nd match either.
On Monday, Zampa was reportedly at training, but was not at the ideal level of fitness to play a full match.
Zampa's absence was a major setback to Australia's chances, especially on a surface that aided spin. While the pitch for the second ODI in Lahore isn't expected to be heavily spin-friendly, Zampa will still be missed.
In Zampa's absence, Australia picked left-armer Matthew Kuhnemann and leggie Tanveer Sangha as their primary spinners in Rawalpindi. Kuhnemann and Sangha put up a good performance, combining to take 2 wickets for just 60 runs in their 20 overs.
Australia also called part-timers Matthew Short, Matt Renshaw, and Marnus Labuschagne to bowl spin.
With Adam Zampa absent, Australia might also be tempted to use the services of all-rounder Cooper Connolly, but he didn't join the squad until Saturday, when he came back from his IPL stint with the Punjab Kings.
Adam Zampa still no certainty to return v Pakistan for second ODI after missing game one with neck spasms. He did some running yesterday but was still not moving with ideal freedom.https://t.co/cFaJBzOxtn

Adam Zampa in ODIs
Zampa's absence will hurt Australia primarily because of his experience. Of all the Australian players who are in the squad for the ODI series against Pakistan, Adam Zampa is the most experienced, having played 116 matches.
In ODIs, he has taken 196 wickets at an average of 28.6 and an economy rate of 5.56. He took his only five-wicket haul in the format against New Zealand in 2022.
Zampa was also part of the Australian squad that won the 2023 ODI World Cup. At that tournament, he became the third player to take four-wicket hauls in three consecutive ODI World Cup matches.
Among Australian spinners, only Shane Warne has more ODI wickets than Adam Zampa.
