The second ODI between Pakistan and Afghanistan on Thursday (August 24) ended in a controversial manner as Babar Azam lost his cool. The Men in Green defeated Afghanistan in a thriller in Hambantota to maintain their perfect record in ODIs against them.
Set a target of 301 runs, Pakistan crossed the finishing line with one ball to spare and one wicket in hand. Naseem Shah was the star with the bat in the final over as he hit Fazalhaq Farooqi for two fours in the final over to help his side score 11 runs in the last over.
Before Naseem Shah’s heroics, Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam led the foundation for the chase by sharing a century-plus stand. While Imam scored 91, Babar Azam scored 53 as the duo shared a 118-run stand for the second wicket. Shadab Khan also played a crucial knock of 48 runs that brought the chase back on track after Pakistan lost a flurry of wickets in the middle overs.
Earlier in the game, a stunning century from Rahmanullah Gurbaz helped Afghanistan post a big total of 300 for 5. The wicketkeeper-batsman scored run-a-ball 151 and shared a big stand of 227 runs with fellow opener Ibrahim Zadran who scored 80 runs. Afghanistan could not finish strongly with the bat but still managed to put themselves on the verge of registering their first-ever ODI win over Pakistan.
Babar Azam loses his cool:
After the match ended, Pakistan captain Babar Azam, who is rarely seen showing emotions on the field, looked very angry. The possible reason behind his behavior is likely to be Shadab Khan’s run-out at the non-striker’s end in the final over.
Before bowling the first ball of the final over, Farooqi decided to take the bails off at the non-striker’s end after Shadab Khan left the crease early. The third umpire adjudged Shadab out and the Pakistan star had no option but to walk off.
And Babar Azam was not at all impressed with the incident. As he walked out to shake hands with the opposition players, he was seen having an animated discussion with veteran Afghanistan allrounder Mohammad Nabi.
