AFG vs SL: "We Were Never Communicated Those Calculations" - Afghanistan Coach Jonathan Trott Unaware Of NRR Calculations

Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott revealed that the team management was unaware of the calculations required to qualify for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023. Jonathan Trott confirmed that they had not been informed about the calculation for advancing to the next stage.
Afghanistan were knocked out of the continental tournament after losing to Sri Lanka by a narrow margin of two runs at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday, September 5. They miscalculated the Net Run Rate (NRR) during the match, which cost them qualification to the Super Four stage.
We Weren’t Told What The Overs – Jonathan Trott
During the post-match press conference, Jonathan Trott highlighted that the match official informed them that the target was 37.1 overs to qualify for the Super Four stages of the tournament.
“We were never communicated those calculations. All we were communicated was we needed to win in 37.1 overs. We weren’t told what the overs in which we could get 295 or 297. [That we could win in] 38.1 overs was never communicated to us.”
Afghanistan were 289-8 at the end of the 37th over, needing three runs off one ball to go past Sri Lanka’s NRR. Mujeeb Ur Rahman got out on the first ball of the 38th over, and Fazalhaq Farooqi blocked the next two deliveries. They could’ve qualified if they smashed six off the next three balls.
Afghanistan had a chance to qualify on net run rate if they reached specific run totals after a certain number of overs, including 293 after 37.2 overs, 294 after 37.3, 295 after 37.5, 296 after 38 overs, or 297 after 38.1.
Don’t Think There’s One Reason – Jonathan Trott
Jonathan Trott refused to attribute their loss solely to miscalculating the net run rate, acknowledging that they made multiple mistakes. Trott admitted that their performance in certain areas, particularly bowling, could have been better.
“I don’t think there’s one reason we lost the game. There are areas of the game we could have done better [in] and that goes for today’s game and the one against Bangladesh. We got some things horribly wrong in a few areas and it’s cost us. It’d be nice if we’d bowled them out a bit cheaper. But it wasn’t to be.”
Mohammad Nabi scored a crucial knock of 65 runs off 32 deliveries, including six fours and five sixes. Rashid Khan remained unbeaten, scoring 27 runs off 16 balls.
