South African-born Former English middle-order batter Jonathan Trott has been chosen as the new head coach of Afghanistan’s national men’s cricket team.
During Afghanistan’s August visit to Ireland, he will assume the job of head coach. Jonathan Trott played 52 test matches for England between 2009 and 2015, amassing 3835 runs at 44.08 with 9 hundreds and 19 half-centuries, with the highest score of 226.
During that time, he also represented England in 68 One Day Internationals (ODIs), scoring 2838 runs at 51.25 with four hundreds and 22 half-centuries.
Jonathan Trott Has Previously Worked With England National Cricket Team
Trott has already worked with England’s senior batting team in South Africa, during the English Test Summer of 2020, and on the red/white ball tour of India last year. He has also served as a batting coach and mentor with the England Lions and U-19s, as well as being the Batting Consultant for Scotland at the 2021 World Twenty20.
“I’m honoured and excited to have the opportunity to take one of international cricket’s most exciting teams through what is a huge year for their development as a team,” Trott said.
He also feels that Afghanistan has shown to be a wellspring of talent, producing players who can play the game in their own unique manner and with unrivalled enthusiasm.
“I can’t wait to get to work with a group of players who are clearly capable of generating results in a style that will make the people of Afghanistan proud,” Trott added on Friday.
ACB was looking for a new coach since the end of last year.
Afghanistan Cricket Team will head to Ireland early in August to compete in five Twenty20 Internationals beginning August 9.
