This is the second time that the two-time World Champions have to feature in a qualifying game.
A multi-format tour was reportedly scheduled between the Afghans and the Windies, featuring a one-off Test, three ODIs and three T20Is. This could have been a blockbuster series at the beginning of the next year. However, a new date will be announced after both boards have a discussion to find a new window to organize the series.
Afghanistan qualified for the ODI World Cup 2027
Afghanistan will need just one win to secure their place at the ODI World Cup 2027; after winning the 2nd ODI against the Irish side, they confirmed their place. They did not stop even after winning the first game; they went on to showcase their dominance and did not give the home side a chance to win a game in the series.
Now they will be playing in T20I formats, as they have scheduled a home series against India with a three-match T20I series, which will be played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, in mid-September. Later, after that, they will take part in the forthcoming Asian Games 2026 with two group stage matches against Japan and Nepal.
Why West Indies fail to earn direct qualification for ODI World Cup 2027?
West Indies have had a tough few months as they lost the ODI series against Sri Lanka and then, despite taking a lead against New Zealand in the five-match series, they ended up on the losing side with a 3-2 result in favour of the Kiwis. That squandered their chances of direct qualification as they slipped down to 10th position in the rankings.
Co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe hold automatic slots in the 2027 World Cup, with the remaining eight direct places selected by ICC rankings. The rankings deadline is September 30. The Windies will face the India National Cricket Team in a three-match ODI series, followed by a five-match T20I series beginning at the end of September and running into October.
