After successfully beating two Asian giants Bangladesh and Pakistan, USA captain Monank Patel has admitted that their next aim will be to beat India.
In their first-ever feature in an ICC T20 World Cup edition, the USA is playing some sensational bit of cricket with full awareness and zeal to come out victorious. Their mindset is not that of other Minnow teams like Canada, Uganda, or PNG among others.
Their mindset is very clear that they are in the World Cup because they are competitive and they can win because they contain talent and belief.
USA's belief paid off
A lot of the credit behind the USA's surging performances must go to skipper Monank Patel, who was born in Gujarat but plays cricket for the United States.
Yesterday, after Pakistan had posted 160 runs as the target, Patel was the one to initiate a strong response. He scored a crucial half-century to draw the momentum towards his team in the powerplay overs.
Monank Patel, an opening batsman, stood for 2 crucial partnerships first with Steven Taylor 36 runs, and then with 68 runs with number 3 Andries Gous.
He was quite unfortunate to not be in the crease until the final over of the 2nd innings but Monank will be more than happy with his contribution of 50 off 38 balls.
His efforts were complimented by Aaron Jones and Nitish Kumar who scored 36 and 14 respectively with the latter tying the scores in the last ball of the 20th over.
Then in the Super Over, USA ended up scoring 18 runs, thanks to Mohammad Amir's terrible bowling performance. Pakistan could even get closer to the target as they were folded for 13 runs and lost by 5 runs.
Thanks to the victory, Monank Patel's USA claimed the top spot in Group A with 4 points and one more win will take them through to the playoffs. They have two more Group A matches to play against India and Canada on June 12 and 14.
Monank Patel sends warning to team India
While speaking in the press conference after the USA's win over Pakistan, Monank Patel put forth his views on how the team played and what are their expectations. He was asked about the team's projection if they are already thinking about the next round, that is Super 8s or not.
In response, Monank Patel stated that the T20 World Cup is a difficult tournament and that his team is not looking far beyond the Group stages. The USA's plan is to take it one game at a time and therefore their immediate focus is now on India, whom they will face on June 12th in New York.
"It's a difficult tournament. I have said earlier also that we want to take it one game at a time and the focus will be on playing against India now. We don't even want to think about Ireland right now. Super 8s are far far ahead, we just wanna focus on one game at a time." - Monank Patel told press reporters in Dallas.
