Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi criticized his son-in-law Shaheen Afridi following the Men in Green’s exit without reaching the semifinals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Ahmed Shehzad backed Shahid for his comments, adding that the former skipper showed courage despite their family relationship.
The left-arm pacer finished the tournament with eight wickets from five matches but conceded runs at an economy rate of 10.52. Notably, the team managed to defeat only one full-member side during the T20 World Cup. Following the underwhelming performance, the PCB is set to penalize Afridi and other players.
We Should Appreciate Shahid Afridi - Ahmed Shehzad
Ahmed Shehzad stated that Shahid Afridi should be appreciated for criticizing Shaheen Afridi after Pakistan’s disappointing campaign. Ahmed Shehzad added that the former captain said what was necessary despite the personal relationship.
"We should appreciate Shahid Afridi for speaking out and criticizing Shaheen Afridi too harshly. It wasn't easy, but he said what needed to be said," Ahmed Shehzad said.

Pakistan kept their semifinal hopes alive by scoring 212 runs in their final match against Sri Lanka, but they needed to restrict the opposition to 147 to stay in contention. However, the bowlers struggled to maintain control, which made the task difficult.
Shaheen had a tough outing with the ball, conceding 48 runs in his four overs. He also bowled the final over of the match, where he gave away 22 runs. Pakistan eventually won the game by just five runs.
Shaheen Afridi Has Been Repeating His Old Mistakes Again and Again - Shahid Afridi
Speaking on Samaa TV, Shahid Afridi questioned Shaheen Afridi’s decision-making in pressure situations. The former Pakistan captain said that the left-arm bowler continues to repeat the same mistakes he had been warned about earlier in his career.
"He (Shaheen Afridi) has been playing for some time now. You don't know from where you have to bowl the last over. He has been told many times, he should know these things by now. He has been repeating his old mistakes again and again," Afridi had said on Samaa TV.
Pakistan Crash Out of T20 World Cup 2026 After Missing Semifinal Spot
Pakistan endured a disappointing campaign at the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The team failed to reach the semifinals and was eventually knocked out due to net run rate.
Salman Ali Agha’s side began the tournament with victories over the Netherlands and the USA in the group stage. However, they suffered a 61-run defeat to India at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Pakistan’s campaign struggled to recover after that setback. A washout against New Zealand and a narrow two-wicket defeat to England further damaged their chances of progressing in the tournament.
Pakistan managed to defeat Sri Lanka by five runs in their final game, but the result was not enough to secure a semifinal spot. Both Pakistan and New Zealand finished the Super 8 stage with the same number of wins and points.
