Having played his last Test for India back in 2023 against the West Indies, Rahane, the middle-order batter, has been waiting for a Test comeback for the past two years.

Playing in 85 Tests for India after his debut against the Aussies in 2013, Rahane amassed 5000+ Test runs at an average of 38.46. After Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli announced their retirement, he remains the only active player from the legendary Indian team during their golden phase of Test cricket.

"At the highest level, when you have guys like Rohit and Virat.." - Ajinkya Rahane drags veterans over India snub

Ajinkya Rahane ruled out age as a factor for keeping him out of the Indian team; however, he took the reference of the Indian greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the white-ball format to prove his point. The way they have won matches for India proves that experience is much needed in the team.

"At the highest level, when you have guys like Rohit and Virat, who have won so many matches for India, especially in white-ball cricket, you need that experience in the team. You cannot go with all the newcomers and all the players on the team. Yes, young blood is important. But I feel that if you have experience, the team will do well, especially in red-ball cricket. I was really happy to see Rohit getting that 100," said Rahane.

Last season, Ajinkya Rahane scored 467 runs in his 14 Test innings at an average of 35.92 with a century in the playoffs and a half-century to his name.

"I know how good a player I am" - Rahane brags after another Ranji Trophy ton

Rahane recorded his century on Saturday, the first day of the game, and then retired hurt. He did not celebrate on reaching the milestone but rather gave a strong reply without taking any names that could stir up a controversy.

"I know how good a player I am. I don't like to focus on what's going on outside. There are many unwanted people. When they don't know about the game, they talk about a player who's been playing consistently, with a good attitude, good intensity, and always wants to do well for Mumbai.

"And also, from a player's point of view, I want Mumbai's players to go and play at the highest level. You know, when some people talk like that, when they don't know the game, they don't know what it takes as an international cricketer who's played for so many years. So, I think something clicked for me. I don't want to name anyone," he said.

Ajinkya Rahane captained the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2025

After a good season in the domestic red-ball games and decent form in white-ball cricket as well, the defending champions in the IPL picked Ajinkya Rahane in the mega-auction.

Later, they pushed him further as the captain of the side due to his overwhelming experience in the IPL. Rahane batted pretty well, emerging as KKR's highest scorer with the bat; however, he could not propel the team to the playoffs.
