Ajinkya Rahane has earned massive love, adoration, and respect in the past few weeks since he led the Indian team to a historic and memorable Test series victory in Australia making a comeback with an injury-riddled and a Virat Kohli-less squad.

After the Adelaide humiliation – India was bowled out for their lowest Test inning total – and losing the services of captain and talisman batsman, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane stepped in as the interim skipper. He led the team, which kept losing players to injury one by one, from the front with arguably his best Test hundred in Melbourne.

Rahane’s a ton and India’s victory at the MCG and his faith in youngsters infused confidence in the team such that visitors went on to manage an epic draw in Sydney and ultimately brach the ‘Fortress Gabba’ in Brisbane winning the series 2-1.

Kangaroo is their national animal, you give your opposition respect: Ajinkya Rahane

Upon return to India, the players were given a grand welcome in their respective cities with dhols, and shehnais, firecrackers were burst and flowers showered over them. Also, there were plenty of cake-cutting ceremonies to celebrate India’s only second Test series triumph on the Australian shores; the first one being a couple of years ago.

Ajinkya Rahane was presented with a cake having a kangaroo on top of it. However, the 32-year-old denied cutting it. The video went viral on social media and the Test vice-captain garnered even more respect from fans.

Speaking to renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle, Rahane said that it would be disrespecting towards the opposition if he cut the cake. The Delhi Capitals opener opines that one should respect other countries and their national animal irrespective of whether they have won the series or not.

“Kangaroo is their national animal. I don’t want to do that. You give your opposition respect, you treat them well even if you win or even if you create history. You have to have respect for your opponent and other countries. That is why I took the decision against cutting the cake with a kangaroo on it,” Ajinkya Rahane told Harsha Bhogle.

The right-hander will be seen in action soon,  as the vice-captain, since Virat Kohli returns to the side for the upcoming home Test series against England which begins on 5th February in Chennai.
