India will play three ODIs and five T20Is against the West Indies, starting on September 27. Ajit Agarkar’s future uncertain as BCCI remains silent on contract extension
Ajit Agarkar’s current contract as the chairman of the Indian selection committee with the BCCI runs until October 4. There were earlier reports that Agarkar’s tenure could be extended for another year and that he could continue until the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.
However, things now look very uncertain. A fresh report by PTI suggests that there has been no clear communication between Agarkar and the top BCCI officials about extending his contract. As of Tuesday night, the BCCI had reportedly not contacted the chief selector about his future.
The report claimed that Wednesday’s selection meeting could reportedly be Agarkar’s final meeting as India’s chief selector, with a further one-year extension currently looking highly unlikely.
Ajit Agarkar’s last selection meeting on the cards?
Even the Jagran News journalist Abhishek Tripathi revealed that Agarkar has not had any recent meeting with BCCI officials about his future, and the board is expected to decide whether VVS Laxman or another person will replace him soon.
He posted on X: “Today, Ajit Agarkar's last selection committee meeting could take place. The BCCI has given no indication so far of extending his term. He has not held any meeting with any BCCI official. Now, whether VVS will come or someone else will take his place will be decided soon.”

Amid the uncertainty, VVS Laxman is being seen as one of the possible choices if the BCCI decides to bring a new person to lead the selection committee. Some reports suggest that he may not be interested in taking the high-pressure chief selector job.
But he is likely to take up a possible new Director of Cricket role, which would have a much bigger position in Indian cricket, including the head coach Gautam Gambhir.
