Team India pace bowler Akash Deep opened up about his sledging with England opener Ben Duckett during the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at The Oval. Akash replied, “You miss, I hit. Not always will you win. This time, I win,” after dismissing the left-hander during the match.
During Day 2 of the fifth Test, Ben Duckett and Akash Deep were involved in a heated exchange. The England opener tried to unsettle the Indian fast bowler by reverse scooping him for six. However, Duckett attempted another reverse sweep but edged it and was caught by wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel.
After the dismissal, Deep celebrated and put his arm around Duckett while exchanging words, a gesture that drew both attention and some criticism. The Indian pacer received criticism from fans and cricket experts alike.
Ben Duckett Said to Me That It Was His Day - Akash Deep
In an interview with Revsportz, Akash Deep said that he has dismissed Ben Duckett on multiple occasions, which gave him confidence. Akash said that Duckett told him it was his day and he would not be able to dismiss him.
“I have a good record against Duckett and have got him out a few times. I have always fancied my chances against the left-handers and he is no different,” said Akash.
"On that day, he was trying to throw me off my line and length and had played a number of unconventional shots. That’s when he said to me that it was his day and I will not be able to get him out," he added.
It Was a Continuation of What He Was Saying to Me - Akash Deep
Akash Deep said that Duckett’s unorthodox strokes made it challenging to maintain a consistent line and length. Deep eventually dismissed Duckett and responded with a lighthearted remark that continued their on-field banter.
“The truth is, if a batter moves around the pitch and plays these shots, your line and length does get impacted, for you don’t really know what he will do next. That’s what was happening. Also, England were off to a quick start and we needed a wicket," Akash continued.
"We were defending a modest score and wickets were critical. When I got him out (smiles), I said to him: ‘You miss, I hit. Not always will you win. This time, I win’. It was a continuation of what he was saying to me, and it was all done in good spirit.”
Akash Deep Played a Major Role in India's Famous Oval Victory
Akash Deep took only one wicket in the first innings of the Oval Test, finishing with figures of 1/80 from 17 overs. However, he made an impact with the bat after being sent in as a night watchman late on Day 2.
The right-handed batter survived the evening and added 66 runs the next morning, helping India post 396 in their second innings. England were close to victory at 301/3 in the fourth innings. Deep removed Harry Brook for 111, triggering a collapse. The hosts lost by six runs, with the series ending 2-2.
Earlier in the series, he had dismissed Ben Duckett twice in the Edgbaston Test. Duckett, however, enjoyed a prolific run, scoring 462 runs at an average of 51.33 across the five matches, including one century and three half-centuries.
