England's assistant coach Paul Collingwood reckons that Jamie Smith is quite similar to the great Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist.

Paul Collingwood believes that Smith can do the similar things that Adam Gilchrist used to do to the opposition during his playing days.

Jamie Smith played an excellent knock of 67 off just 50 balls during the second innings of the third Test between England and Sri Lanka at the Oval.

He struck 10 fours and 1 six during his knock and helped England set a target of more than 200 runs for Sri Lanka.

England were on top after taking a 62-run first innings lead. However, Sri Lankan bowlers had other ideas as they reduced the home side to 82-7 in the second innings. But Smith rallied around with the tailenders to play a brilliant innings under pressure.

Knowing that tailenders could be dismissed anytime soon, he started playing aggressively and went on to smash a whirlwind fifty. The fact that he did not have any specialist batter to accompany him from the other end, makes this an even better knock.

Paul Collingwood impressed by Jamie Smith; draws comparison with Adam Gilchrist

Speaking after the end of Day 3 at the Oval, Paul Collingwood was all praises for Jamie Smith and called him an entertainer. During the chat with the media, Paul Collingwood also compared Smith's skills with Adam Gilchrist.

"It's exciting when he (Jamie Smith) comes in. He's certainly an entertainer. You go back to the days when Gilchrist would come in for Australia. It sucks the life out of you as the opposition when someone can do something like that. In his short Test career, he has shown some great skills," Paul Collingwood said.

Adam Gilchrist was an aggressive batter who used to take on the opposition bowlers with his attacking style. Jamie Smith has had a fantastic start to his Test career.

The 24-year-old has scored 404 runs in five Tests so far at an average of 50.50 and a strike rate of 70 with 1 hundred and 2 fifties.

Despite failing to score big in England's first innings, Jamie Smith ensured to play a significant knock in the second innings.

He top-scored for England in the second innings propelled the hosts to 156 runs, and set a target of 219 runs for the visitors.

Sri Lanka inch ahead in the match

The target is not huge but had it not been Smith's innings, England would have been struggling in this Test match.

Chasing 219 to win, Sri Lanka started positively as Pathum Nissanka took on England's new ball bowlers Chris Woakes and Gus Atinkson.

Debutant Josh Hull was brought in as the first change but he went for plenty of runs as well. Sri Lanka were 94-1 after 15 overs with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis at the crease. Nissanka was unbeaten on 53 off just 44 balls while Mendis was batting on 30 off 25 balls.

Sri Lankan batters are likely to play a positive brand of cricket on Day 4 as well. They need 125 runs to win the match with 9 wickets in hand and are in the driver's seat. The visitors will be aiming to reach the target as soon as possible.
