Adamant and aggressive opener! These words truly describe Adam Gilchrist, who is still regarded as the best wicketkeeper opener to date. Adam Gilchrist was another gemstone of the Australian team that ruled international cricket from 2000 to 2010.

Adam Gilchrist was a left-handed batsman who used to bat with Matthew Hayden for Australia. He and Hayden were left-handers and both of them played wonderful match-winning knocks for the side. The duo became the best choice of openers for Australia in the shortest format.

Early and Personal Life

Adam Gilchrist was born in November 1971 in Bellington City in New South Wales in Australia. His father Stanley was a teacher and former cricketer. He had three siblings- brothers Dene and Glenn and sister Jackie.

The cricketer-turned-commentator married dietician Melinda Sharpe in 1992 and the couple has three sons and one daughter. Harrison, Archie, and Ted are his three sons while Annie is their only daughter.

Domestic Career

Gilchrist was less active in his domestic career as he was part of the national team across all formats during major part of his career. He was the first-choice wicketkeeper for Australia. He represented New South Wales from 1992 to 1994 ahead of his national debut. Later, he also played for Western Australia from 1994 to 1996 and 2007 to 2008.

International Career

Adam Gilchrist made his international debut in 1996 with an ODI against South Africa. The left-handed batsman could only add 18 runs in his opening game at the no.7 position.

He made his Test debut three years later in 1999, in a clash against Pakistan at home. He shattered an 81-run knock in the match to voice his entry into the longest format.

With his stunning show on debut, he became a permanent member of the Test side.

Gilchrist ended his career when he was just 4 games short of his century in Test, however, he held a stunning average of 47+ across 96 games.

He made a major impact in ODIs, smacking 9619 runs in 287 matches. He also shattered 33 centuries across both formats.

Franchise Career

Adam Gilchrist's international career ended in 2008 but he became active in the franchise leagues. He played in the Indian Premier League in the first few seasons from 2008 to 2013.

He was a member of Deccan Chargers from 2008 to 2010 and Kings XI Punjab from 2011 to 2013. He also led the team to the title with Deccan Charges in the 2009 edition.

Legacy

Adam Gilchrist is one of the best and most honest players to play for Australia. When Aussies were subjected to criticism for their sledging in the early 2000s, Gilchrist was a calm and composed guy who was only interested in his game.

The left-handed batsman is an idol for many current wicketkeepers, who consider him the best wicket-keeper batsman of all time.
