There was intense hype over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s return to the international arena, but both the batting icons failed to live up to the expectations in the three-match ODI series opener between India and Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth on October 19.

Batting for the first time since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final, Virat Kohli left the fans and the team disappointed as he was dismissed for a duck after facing eight deliveries in the first ODI against Australia. Following this, fans' mixed reactions flooded social media.

Virat Kohli falls for a Duck on comeback

Mitchell Starc bowled a full delivery outside the off stump, tempting Kohli to go for an ambitious cover drive. But the Indian batting legend reached out a bit too far, and the ball caught the thick outside edge of his bat. It flew quickly towards the backward point, where Cooper Connolly pulled off a brilliant diving catch to his left to shock the Indian fans.

The crowd fell silent as Kohli walked back for a duck, leaving India in early trouble. After this big wicket, Starc becomes the second bowler to dismiss Kohli for a duck twice after legendary England pacer James Anderson across all Internationals.

Following his flop show on his comeback, fans have been trolling Kohli for his rare failure. Some fans slammed the former Indian captain’s desperation to play the cover drive early in the innings, while some were just left disappointed with his poor outing amidst the speculation over his ODI future.

Kohli's dismissal in the Perth ODI took fans back to his off-stump struggles that already ended his Test career following this issue consistently troubled him during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

Here is how fans react to Virat Kohli's flop show in Perth:

Australia dominate early as India’s top order falls apart in powerplay

Meanwhile, India had a disastrous start in the first ODI against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth, as their top order collapsed within the opening overs. For the first time in 30 ODI innings in Australia, Kohli was dismissed for a duck, adding an unwanted record to his celebrated career.

The top three—Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli—could together score only 18 runs, with Rohit making 8, Gill 10, and Kohli 0. This is the lowest combined total by three in any ODI where all three have batted. Their previous lowest was 25 runs against Pakistan in Pallekele in 2023, when Rohit scored 11, Gill 10, and Kohli 4.

The combined total of 18 runs by India’s top three is also their lowest in an ODI since the 2019 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand in Manchester, when they had managed only 3 runs. Adding to India’s troubles, they ended the Powerplay at 27/3, which equals their lowest Powerplay score since 2023. Previously, India had recorded 27 for 3 against Australia in Chennai in 2023.
