All Viewership Records Shattered As World Cup 2023 Becomes Biggest-Ever ICC Event

The ICC World Cup 2023 was the biggest ICC event in every manner. The World Cup 2023 which was won by Australia by defeating India in the final at the world’s largest cricket stadium, broke many records on the digital and the broadcasting platforms.

The 2023 ODI World Cup overtook the 1 trillion barrier for the total viewing minutes on the broadcast platform. This also included new technological inventions such as the vertical video feed. The 2023 edition of the tournament saw an increase of 38 percent from the 2011 edition which was co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh whereas the viewership was 19 percent more than the previous edition which was held in the United Kingdom.

World Cup 2023 create a flurry of viewership records

The mega finale between India and Australia was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in front of more than 1 lakh 30 thousand spectators. The match was the most viewed ICC game which recorded 88.7 billion viewing minutes globally which was 46 percent more than the 2011 ODI World Cup final.

India was the major contributor to the whopping rise in the viewership of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Only 422 billion viewing minutes were recorded on the Disney Plus Hotstar which was 54 percent more than in 2011 and 9 percent more than the 2019 ODI World Cup.

There was also a major increase in the female viewership of the tournament where a 34 percent rise was seen than the 2011 edition of the tournament which recorded 32 percent of female viewership.

The tournament also showed immense popularity outside India where the United Kingdom saw 800 hours of live coverage which resulted in 5.86 billion viewing minutes. Australia also contributed to the popularity of the tournament which was 3.79 billion viewing minutes from 602 hours of live coverage. This was 92 percent more than the 2011 edition of the ODI World Cup.

Australia’s success in the World Cup 2023 also saw an additional 9.1 million people come in to watch the tournament which was three million more than 2019.

Pakistan also recorded a lot of viewership from the World Cup 2023 as a total of 237.12 viewing minutes were recorded from the live coverage.

Also, Disney Plus Hotstar’s decision to stream the World Cup 2023 for free proved to be a masterstroke as the peak concurrent viewership was broken four times in the whole tournament. The final attracted the most audience on the streaming platform.

The 2o23 ODI World Cup was also the most engaging ICC event on the digital platform as a total of 16.6 billion views were recorded across all social media platforms.

On social media, Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell’s fighting 200-run knock against Afghanistan was the most-watched video as it recorded more than 50 million views. Virat Kohli’s 50th ODI ton and the bowing moment to Sachin Tendulkar was the second most watched video which attracted a total of 40 million viewers. Kohli’s wicket of Netherlands captain Scott Edwards was also one of the most watched videos from the tournament and recorded 39 million views.

The 2023 ODI World Cup also recorded a huge rise in web and app platforms. It reached 97.5 unique users 29 percent more than 2019. The page views on the website were 704 million which was 96 percent more than the 2022 T20 World Cup.
