Sydney Thunder have made a blockbuster move ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2026-27 season by appointing legendary England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff as their new head coach. Flintoff has replaced Trevor Bayliss as the Thunder head coach.

Interestingly, Flintoff was already part of the BBL. Actually, the former England all-rounder played for Brisbane Heat during the 2014-15 season, but this time he returns to the Australian league in a different role. Flintoff signed a two-year deal with the Sydney Thunder as the head coach.
Sydney Thunder desperately needed a fresh start after a forgettable BBL 2025-26 season. The team managed to win only two matches and finished at the bottom of the points table. It was the second time in the last three seasons that the franchise ended up last on the table.

The franchise will now be hoping that one of England's greatest all-rounders can help turn their fortunes around and make them serious title contenders once again after his impressive two-year stint as head coach of Northern Superchargers in England's The Hundred competition.
Andrew Flintoff sends strong message after landing Sydney Thunder job
Speaking about his appointment, Flintoff said that he was aware of the expectations that come with the role, but he was confident that he could contribute significantly to the Thunder’s success in the future. He was really excited for his first big overseas assignment.
Andrew Flintoff said in an official statement: “When the opportunity to coach Sydney Thunder arose, obviously I was excited. You grow up seeing Sydney on the TV ... not thinking I'd ever get the opportunity to go there, never mind the opportunity to head coach Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash.”

The former England all-rounder added, “One of my aims over the time with Sydney Thunder is that every player looks back thinking, 'That's the best part of the year; that's a team that I want to play for.'" I'm excited to come over, get involved, and coach this team. I'm here to do the best job I possibly can for the team and everybody that comes out and supports us.”

Meanwhile, Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland said, “This is a huge day in the history of Sydney Thunder and the BBL more broadly. Flintoff's England career
Flintoff is also currently in charge of England A and England Lions and has led the young side on two tours of Australia since taking over the role in 2024. He has also worked with England's senior teams. During his playing days, Flintoff was one of England's biggest match-winners.
Across 79 Test matches, he scored 3,845 runs and took 226 wickets. He also has an impressive career in ODI cricket, where he scored 3,394 runs and claimed 169 wickets. His ability to change games with both bat and ball made him one of the finest all-rounders England has ever produced. He also has 650+ runs and 39 wickets in 39 T20Is to his name.
