Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, has urged all-rounder Glenn Maxwell to exercise caution following an alcohol-related incident in Adelaide. Andrew McDonald emphasized the need for Glenn Maxwell to make careful decisions to prolong his cricket career.

Glenn Maxwell has not participated in any cricket since the Big Bash League (BBL) playoffs. The veteran all-rounder faced embarrassment following an incident at an Adelaide pub last week, resulting in hospitalization. However, Maxwell was discharged after a brief period.

The 35-year-old has been rested for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies, scheduled to begin on February 2. The swashbuckling batter has resumed training and is expected to participate in the three-match T20I series starting on February 9.

We’ve Given Him The Opportunity To Rest – Andrew McDonald

In addressing the incident, Andrew McDonald stated that he had a constructive conversation with Glenn Maxwell. McDonald emphasized the importance of Maxwell prioritizing his well-being moving forward.

“I’ve spoken to Glenn, had a good chat to him yesterday around the incident, and him looking after himself has to be a consideration moving forward. We’ve given him the opportunity to rest and rehab in that period of time and I suppose the lessons for him around that would be to take up his end of the bargain in that place and take care of himself,” McDonald told SEN.

“It’s got to be a consideration for him how he looks after himself moving forward for the longevity of his career, but we’ve also got to weigh into that with the way we manage him, and we feel as though this is best for him at this point in time,” he added.

Want Glenn Maxwell Playing For Australia For As Long As He Can – Andrew McDonald

Andrew McDonald expressed his desire to see Glenn Maxwell continue playing cricket for the next three to four years, including in the 2027 World Cup. McDonald emphasized the need for strategic management due to Maxwell’s previous injury.

“We want to see Glenn Maxwell playing cricket for the next three to four years for Australia. Can he get to the next World Cup in 2027 in South Africa? Who knows. But he’s a key player in our white-ball formats. When he is out there we’re a far better team and on the back of that horrific injury that he did have, there’s going to be some management things that are put in place around him,” McDonald further stated.

“But we want Glenn Maxwell playing for Australia for as long as he can. We’re going to have to do our end and Glenn is no doubt going to have to hold up his end of the bargain.”

Maxwell will be approaching the twilight of his international career. The all-rounder aspires to represent Australia in the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, his participation depends on effective workload management.

The Australian middle-order batter faced an extended absence from cricket due to his leg injury after the 2022 T20 World Cup. He made a strong comeback in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. He played a pivotal role in Australia’s triumph at the 2023 ODI World Cup.
