The Sri Lanka Vs Bangladesh match produced a controversial moment when Angelo Mathews was declared timed out as he failed to take his crease before the required time. However, the spirit of the game is being questioned here as Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for the wicket. This is the first instance in the history of ODI cricket where a batter was timed out.

Law 40 of the Laws of Cricket provides that an incoming batter must be in a position to take the guard or for their partner to be ready to receive the next ball within three minutes (2 minutes in ICC playing conditions) of the fall of the previous wicket. If the player fails to do so then the fielding team can make an appeal to the umpire and the batter can be declared ‘timed out’.

Angelo Mathews was coming onto bat at No. 6 after Sadeera Samarwickrama was out, according to the law the next batter is supposed to be on the crease in two minutes and Mathews was there ten seconds ahead, However, there was some issue with Mathews’ helmet and he signaled the dugout for another helmet and by the time he got his new helmet, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for the wicket and somehow Angelo Mathews was timed out.

Angelo Mathews’ Sri Lanka Video Of Mankading Jos Buttler Is Being Surfaced

Talking about the spirit of the game, Angelo Mathews’ led the Sri Lankan team once Mankaded Jos Buttler and the video is being resurfaced for all the spirit of the game talks. In this case, Jos Buttler was initially given a warning by the bowler but when he again advanced from the crease, the bowler knocked off the bails and he was rendered out.

Shakib Al Hasan was asked twice by the umpire to withdraw the appeal but he refused to do so. Angelo Mathews also asked Shakib to withdraw the appeal to which Shakib said, “Look, Angelo, I know that it is very unfortunate but I am not withdrawing the appeal.” Shakib Al Hasan was told by a fielder that if he appealed now then Mathews would be out and he went for it.

Bangladesh has been already eliminated from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 but now they are fighting for a spot in the ICC Champions Trophy. They will face Australia in their last match of the World Cup and the Aussies will not go easy on them.
