Former India captain Anil Kumble has said he will remember the recently-concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 for India’s dominating bowling performances.
India’s bowlers thoroughly dominated the the World Cup. In a tournament where teams scored heavily for fun, not a single team managed to touch the 300-run mark against India during the nine matches in league stage. The likes of Australia, Pakistan and England could not even touch the 200-run mark while South Africa and Sri Lanka were bowled out for less than 100 runs by Team India.
India won all of their nine league games with utmost ease before thrashing New Zealand by 70 runs in the semifinal. Their winning run finally came to an end in the final with a six-wicket defeat against Australia. Defending a modest 240, India’s bowlers had reduced Australia to 47 for 3 but Travis Head’s century and Marnus Labuschagne’s unbeaten fifty took the latter home.
Anil Kumble praises India’s bowlers:
With the World Cup done and dusted, Anil Kumble was all praise for India’s bowlers. He singled out Mohammed Shami for special praise and said that India’s bowling performance stood out for him in the thirteenth edition of the World Cup.
“If you want to look at the Indian fast bowling. I would certainly like to pick Mohammed Shami. All the fifers that he picked up were outstanding. The spell that he bowled against England, the 7-fer in the semifinal, fifer in the previous game against Sri Lanka,” Anil Kumble told ESPNcricinfo.
“In that sense, it certainly stands out – the bowling effort. Bowlers win you tournament and today’s Australia’s bowlers won them the tournament. In that sense, the bowling performance by this Indian team was totally dominating,” he added.
