Royal Challengers Bangalore pace bowler Akash Deep said it was a dream for him to share the dressing room with Virat Kohli in the IPL 2022. Deep, who plays for the Bengal state team at the domestic level, was sold to RCB for his base price of INR 20 lakh in the IPL 2022 auction.
The Bengal pacer got just five games to play for the Faf du Plessis-led team in IPL 2022 and picked five wickets at an average of 41. His best match figures 3/45 came against Kolkata Knight Riders in RCB’s second match of the season.
Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni were like superheroes: Akash Deep
Deep mentioned MS Dhoni’s winning shot in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka interested him to play the game and how he admired Kohli as a childhood idol. The 25-year-old shared the experience of meeting Kohli in person and the former RCB skipper’s advice to him.
“That World Cup moment stirred interest in me. As a kid, when we used to watch the likes of Kohli and Dhoni on TV, I used to think whether I would ever get a chance to meet them in my life. In my mind, they were like superheroes. And from the place I come from, in my wildest imagination, I never thought that someday, I would end up sharing the dressing room with Kohli. Everything is a dream,” Akash told Indian Express.
“I was shocked that he (Kohli) knows where I am from, my journey, struggle, and everything. While giving me the cap, he said, ‘You deserve to be here. Just keep doing what you have done in the past. Just enjoy yourself, stick to your process.’ It was a very emotional moment,” he added.
RCB’s wait for maiden IPL title to be continued
RCB managed to qualify for the IPL 2022 playoffs on the back of Mumbai Indians’ victory against Delhi Capitals in their final group stage game. RCB defeated Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator game but lost to Rajasthan Royals in the Qualifier 2 and hence the wait for the elusive title goes on for their loyal fans.
