Ashes 2021-22: I'll Look At My Future Beyond This Tour At The End Of It, I Think There Are Questions For Me To Answer – Joe Root

England red-ball captain Joe Root has said that he will look at his future as skipper after the Ashes and there are a lot of questions for him to answer.
Root has faced heavy criticism after England’s poor performance in the ongoing Ashes series against Australia. England lost three back-to-back games in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne and now they are trailing by 0-3 in the 5-match Test series.
Meanwhile, Root is set to become his country’s longest-serving Test skipper at the fourth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday, surpassing Alastair Cook’s 59 matches tally.
On Monday, Joe Root said that the Ashes 2021-22 has been challenging for the England team and they are dealing with things both on and off the field.
“Obviously it’s been very challenging and we’ve had a lot to deal with, not just on the field but off it, and we are just trying to manage it as best we can,” the 31-year-old Root said.
“I’ll look at my future beyond this tour at the end of it, I think there are questions for me to answer. I don’t think, as a distraction around the group, it should be something I’m wasting energy on now,’ he added.
Root further said that he will “throw everything” he has in the last two Ashes games.
“I need to make sure I throw everything I can into these next two games. I owe that to this team and the players. That will give us the best chance of getting the results that we desire,” said Root.
A Captain Is Someone You Want To Go Out And Play For, Joe Root Is Someone I Always Want To Play For – Ben Stokes
After Root’s failure, there are speculations that star all-rounder Ben Stokes might be given the captaincy responsibility in Test cricket.
However, the 30-year-old Stokes has said that he ” never really had an ambition to be a captain”. He stated:
“I’ve never really had an ambition to be a captain. That’s totally Joe’s decision. He shouldn’t be forced into doing it. I’m sure Cooky [Alastair Cook] felt the same way. He did it for so long. When he knew his time was up, his time was up [but] those discussions haven’t been entered anywhere near Joe.”
Ben Stokes further elaborated:
“Captaincy is more than about setting fields, picking the team, making decisions out there in the middle. A captain is someone you want to go out and play for. Joe Root is someone I always want to play for.”
Meanwhile, former cricketer Michael Atherton feels that it’s the right time for Ben Stokes to take over the captaincy responsibility of the England Test team.
“Root has been a good England captain and has always carried himself superbly and is an incredible ambassador for the sport,” he wrote in his column for The Times last week.
“But having done the job for five years and having had three cracks at the Ashes, including two awful campaigns in Australia, it is time for someone else to have a go.”
