England’s white-ball coach Matthew Mott talked about the Australian squad for the Ashes 2023. He said that it was weird to see just four fast bowlers in their squad.

Cricket Australia recently announced the squad for the ICC World Test Championship Final and the first two Tests of the Ashes 2023. The team will be captained by Pat Cummins with Steve Smith being the vice-captain of the team.

What surprised many was they have named four frontline pacers in the squad in Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland, and Mitchell Starc. Apart from this, they have two all-rounders in Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green.

Matthew Pott feels that Australia might call up Michael Neser later in the team as he’s in England playing for Glamorgan in the county championship. He also said that they might look to play 8 pacers in the Ashes. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:

IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)

“Yeah, I had a look at that when they picked the four seamers. I thought that was a little bit of a weird choice, but I mean, they do have some seamers over here, Michael Neser, played for Glamorgan, is over here and fit, so they will have people they can call upon and bring them in the squad should they need them, and as for us needing eight fit seamers, I think that’s only right that we have that depth in the squad to call upon if we need.”

Ashes 2023: “Fast bowlers do need to be rested and rotated,” says Matthew Mott

Matthew Mott further went on to say that with five matches slated to take in six weeks, fast bowlers should be rested and rotated. He elaborated:

“Fast bowlers do need to be rested and rotated, and with five matches in six weeks, that is a tough ask for anyone. I think if I can be in and around that, which is something that I do hope to achieve, then I think that would be good.”

The Ashes 2023 will kick start from 16th June in Edgbaston. The second match will be played at Lord’s on 28th June. The third game will be played on July 6th in Leeds whereas the last two games are slated to take place on July 19th and July 27th at Manchester and the Oval respectively.
