Cricket Australia (CA) might have the desire to open all doors to stage an Ashes match in India, but there is no plan right now that will allow an Australia vs England Test match on Indian soil.

Greenberg’s comments soon gained pace as CA is all set to host the opening match of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) in Chennai, India. As the national cricket governing body is exploring the global cricketing market, an Ashes match in India also did not sound unnatural.
“We’d have to be open to consider all options,” Greenberg said in the BBC interview.
Todd Greenberg said that they would be open to considering all options, but he did not say that CA was planning to host an Australia vs England match in India. He just provided a hint, not any assurance.
Latest reports claim Cricket Australia has no plans to host The Ashes in India
In the follow-up to Todd Greenberg’s comments, CODE Sports, Australia’s local sports website, in one of their latest reports, directly claimed: Cricket Australia has no plans to stage an Ashes Test in India despite chief executive Todd Greenberg’s indications.
The report mentioned that while the top official of the Aussie cricket board showed an openness to host an Ashes match in India, there was actually no format discussion with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) regarding this. As there were no formal talks between Cricket Australia and ECB, an Ashes match in India in the near future is not likely to happen soon in the future.
As The Ashes is between Australia and England, without concerns and agreements from both cricket boards, hosting the prestigious series elsewhere is not possible. If CA wishes to arrange a match in India, then they will have to engage in dialogue with the England cricket board. If the England cricket board agrees to Cricket Australia's proposal, only then could the Ashes be held outside Australia or England.
Before concluding, the verbal communication itself could take a long time. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the regional cricket board in India may also be required in the communication.

To finalize the BBL 2026-27 opener in Chennai, the officials of Cricket Australia were reportedly engaged in a long conversation. Before receiving the green signal from the Indian cricket governing board, the CA officials had to arrive in Chennai during the IPL 2026 season to take the conversation a step further.
The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association was also a part of the discussion table, as without their concerns, a BBL match at Chepauk would not be possible to make final.
As The Ashes is one of the most celebrated rivalries in the sports world, it could take a series of discussions if CA strongly wants to play a Test match against England in India.
