Ashish Nehra's nomination for India Head Coach filed as Gautam Gambhir's replacement

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has showered praise on Ashish Nehra for his coaching tenure with the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2025 season. The former off-spinner also said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should appoint Nehra to a coaching role with the India national cricket team.

Gujarat Titans have shown an impressive performance in the ongoing IPL 2025 season, securing six wins from eight games. They are currently at the top of the points table, becoming the first team to reach six victories. The Shubman Gill-led side has secured 12 points and boasts an impressive Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.104.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel 'Harbhajan Turbanator Singh', the cricketer-turned-commentator stated that Ashish Nehra is the best choice to coach the Indian cricket team. However, Harbhajan Singh said that Nehra might decline the offer due to the demanding schedule.

"I think there is no better coach than him for the Indian team in the present scenario. He is a great coach. BCCI should ask him whether he wants to work with the Indian team or not. I don't think he will agree because he won't be able to give that much time. But there is no better option than him," Harbhajan said.

Ashish Nehra Has Been the Head Coach of Gujarat Titans Since 2022

The Board of Control for Cricket in India appointed Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of Team India. He replaced Rahul Dravid, who ended his stint after leading India to a T20 World Cup victory in 2024.

Nehra has been the head coach of the Gujarat Titans since their debut in 2022. He guided the team to an IPL title in their first year and a runner-up finish in 2023. Nehra became the first Indian coach to win the IPL title in 2022.

The team failed to qualify for the playoffs in the 2024 season in the absence of key players like Hardik Pandya and Mohammad Shami. Nehra often communicates directly with his players from the boundary ropes. He also served as the bowling coach for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Harbhajan Singh said that Nehra's mindset has transformed the team into a strong contender. He added that the team has been consistently prepared and ready for every challenge.

"Well done, Ashish Nehra. From the day he joined, he has breathed life into this team. Every year, this team comes prepared. People say that a left-arm spinner can't bowl to left-handed batters, or that an off-spinner can't bowl to right-handed batters, but Ashish Nehra's bowlers have done it all. It is about the mindset, and this is what Ashish Nehra brings," Singh stated.

The Shubman Gill-led team will take on the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Monday, April 28.

They need to win at least two of their remaining matches to reach the playoffs. They will be hoping to finish in the top two of the points table.
