"Outstanding Off Spinner"- these words truly describe the legacy of Harbhajan Singh in Indian Cricket. Undoubtedly, Harbhajan Singh is one of the best off-spinners to ever play for Team India. He was part of the side that won the ICC ODI World Cup 2011 and ICC T20 World Cup 2007.
Harbhajan Singh also spent most of his IPL career with the two most successful franchises- Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. He was a right-arm off-spinner and a powerful tailender batsman. Notably, Harbhajan was known for his ability to hit big sixes.
Family and Personal Life
Harbhajan Singh was born on July 3, 1980, in Jalandhar City in Punjab. His father Sardar Sardev Singh Plaha was a businessman while his mother Avtar Kaur was a homemaker. He grew up with his five sisters. The right-arm spinner married actress Geeta Basra in 2015.
Early and Domestic Career
Harbhajan Singh started his early career in childhood with coaches Charanjit Singh Bullar and Davinder Arora. He got a break into the domestic circuit in 1997 for Punjab Team. He played for the side from 1997 to 2019 until he retired from international cricket.
International Career
Harbhajan Singh made his international debut in 1998 and played for the Indian team till 2016 when he played his last T20 game. He played his first Test in 1998 against Australia and his last game against Sri Lanka in 2015. He played a total of 103 Test matches and picked 417 wickets.
The right-arm spinner played his first ODI in 1998 and played a total of 236 games till 2015. During the tenure, he grabbed 269 wickets at an average of 33+. He also played 28 T20I games for India where he picked 25 scalps at an economy of 6.20.
Franchise Career
Harbhajan Singh was one of the old members of the Indian Premier League who was part of the league since 2008 and played a total of 103 matches. He captured a total of 150 wickets in the tournament.
Interestingly, he played for only three teams in his entire IPL career and they are the most successful ones. The Turbanator played for Mumbai Indians from 2008 to 2017, Chennai Super Kings from 2018 to 2020, and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2021. He won titles during his stay at Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.
