Australia Women’s Cricket Team vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner was involved in a controversy off the field after her ex-wife, Monica Wright, had alleged her of cheating. After the comments, the Australia vice-captain has now provided her first reaction to the allegations made by her ex-wife. Wright previously took a dig at Gardner and also Cricket Australia.
Monica Wright asked Cricket Australia to remove Ashleigh Gardner from the vice-captaincy role, and she was vocal about the cheating scandal involving the cricketer. Wright had gone public as she spoke about the cheating and blamed the apex body in the media. However, no action has been taken against the cricketer.
Ashleigh Gardner breaks silence on Monica Wright's comments
Now, Ashleigh Gardner has come forward to defend herself and discuss the matter. She posted on her Instagram story regarding the matter, stating that the separation is her personal matter and that she understands that the matter should be addressed by Cricket Australia, as she is the vice-captain of the side, and she thanked the cricket body for supporting her.
"While my separation from my wife is a personal matter, I understand my current relationship status needed to be addressed by Cricket Australia given my position as vice-captain. I am grateful that the CA Board has chosen to support my continued leadership. I look forward to playing a strong role as a leader and providing the best possible support for my teammates in the season to come."
Ashleigh Gardner seeks apologies from Monica Wright
Gardner further thanked her estranged wife, Monica Wright; she also sought apologies from her for the problem and pain that has been caused. She has wished Wright happiness and success for the future, and she is not ready to make any kind of comments in the media or publicly further regarding this matter and asked for privacy for the involved parties.
"I am grateful for the time Monica and I shared and sorry for the pain this has caused. I wish her nothing but happiness and success in the future. I won't be making any further public comment on this matter at this time and ask that the privacy of those involved is respected," Gardner posted on her Instagram story.
What happened between Ashleigh Gardner and Monica Wright?
Ashleigh Gardner and Monica Wright got married in April 2025, but separated later separated following a public infidelity scandal. The cricketer was alleged to have cheated with Wright as the former was having an affair with national teammate Georgia Voll during an ODI World Cup 2025 campaign.
She previously posted on Instagram to clarify media reports, sharing a photograph of teammate Georgia Voll with the caption, "This is who my wife cheated on me with."
Not only Cricket Australia but also her Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) franchise, Sydney Sixers, backed her during the controversy.
Recently, she was also part of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 winning squad, which the Aussies won against the England side at Lord’s. They have won it 7 times (2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020, 2023, and 2026) out of 10 editions.
