Shakib Al Hasan was named the new Bangladesh ODI skipper for the Asia Cup 2023 and ICC World Cup 2023 following the unceremonious exit of Tamim Iqbal. Shakib was in contention for the post alongside Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan.
However, the BCB finally zeroed in on Shakib due to his proven leadership experience and him being the most experienced player in this current Bangladesh setup. With the captain appointed, Bangladesh can now concentrate on their preparations for the two global events. The Bangla Tigers are placed alongside Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in Group B in the Asia Cup 2023.
There Is No More Serious Than Him: Nazmul Hassan On Shakib Al Hasan
BCB President Nazmul Hassan shared his opinion on Shakib’s appointment as the ODI skipper. Shakib has previously led Bangladesh in the 2011 ODI World Cup and he will lead again in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
“There’s no doubt about his potential. One thing I feel very good about, in recent times… watching over the last one year… is that I had doubts about Shakib, it’s my personal opinion, how serious he is, what game he will play. Nor will he play … Now I see there is no one more serious than him, about cricket,” BCB President was quoted by Daily Star.
Nazmul Hassan further seems happy with the fact that Shakib Al Hasan has got game time under his belt having played in the Zim Afro T10 as well as in the ongoing Lanka Premier League.
“The amount of games we have, he is playing continuously all of those. He went to Canada, now back to Sri Lanka. Now that he has got the captaincy in the World Cup, I think he is now totally focused on cricket. It’s a big deal for us. There is never any doubt about his ability,” he further said on Shakib.
The BCB President admitted that he has not yet discussed with Shakib regarding him leading Bangladesh in all three formats.
“If he says he wants to captain in one format, then it’s one thing. He might say he wants to captain in two formats, maybe in white ball or red ball. Then it’s another thing. He might even say he’s comfortable in captaining in three formats. So we want to discuss with him first and then take a decision through the board. But I think he might be under much pressure if he wants to captain in three formats given the amount of matches we have coming up,” Hassan concluded saying.
