Star Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan shared an emotional message after Afghanistan failed to qualify for the Super Fours of the Asia Cup 2023 and said that the team will come back after learning from their mistakes.

In Afghanistan’s last group stage match against Sri Lanka, Rashid Khan’s side lost the match by two runs. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first.

Sri Lanka gave a target of 292 runs after Kusal Mendis played a 92-run knock from 84 balls with a strike rate of 109.52. Pathum Nissanka also scored 41 runs from 40 balls with a strike rate of 102.50. Gulbadin Naib led the Afghani bowling attack, scalped four wickets in his 10-over spell, and gave away 60 runs. Rashid Khan too picked up two wickets in his 10-over spell and gave away 63 runs.

In the second innings, Afghanistan tried to finish the match by 37.1 overs so that they could get a higher net run rate to qualify, however, the Afghanistan side didn’t know that they could have qualified even if they finished at 295 after 37.4 overs.

Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi played stellar innings to lead the Afghani squad but their efforts went to waste in the end. Rashid Khan played a 27-run knock from 16 balls with a strike rate of 168.75.

Following this, Rashid Khan’s Afghanistan finished at the bottom of Group A and failed to move further in the tournament. However, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh moved ahead in the tournament.

In sport there are many ups and downs: Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan took to his official X (formerly known as Twitter) account and shared his grief for not being able to qualify for the Super Fours of the Asia Cup 2023.

The Afghani star player wrote that in every sport there are ups and downs and the team will come back stronger and will learn from their mistakes.

“In sport there are many ups and downs. You learn, grow and come back stronger. Thank you for always supporting us,” Rashid Khan wrote.

Afghanistan will now focus on their upcoming voyage in the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. The team will start their journey in the prestigious tournament against Bangladesh on October 7th at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala.
