Shreyas Iyer could be available for India’s last Super 4 match in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 after reportedly feeling no discomfort while training on Thursday (September 14).

With a place in the final already sealed, India had scheduled an optional training session on Thursday morning, one day before taking on Bangladesh in the last Super 4 game. Most of the key players skipped the session. However, everyone was waiting to see whether Shreyas Iyer would train or not and the middle-order batsman did come out for the training session at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Shreyas Iyer missed India’s last two games after experiencing pain in his back. The right-handed batsman had returned to action after almost five months in the ongoing Asia Cup and could play only two games before being sidelined again due to a back spasm. In his absence, KL Rahul played at number four against Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Shreyas Iyer trains comfortably:

Shreyas Iyer was training for the first time since suffering a back spasm while warming up moments before the game against Pakistan on Sunday (September 12). According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the batsman did not look in any sort of pain or discomfort while batting in the nets.

The middle-order batsman underwent stretching, particularly his back, with the trainer Rajnikanth. After jogging and sprinting for a while, Shreyas Iyer hit the nets where he first faced underarm throwdowns before taking on fast-bowling throwdowns. He also faced a couple of net bowlers and looked comfortable.

In Shreyas Iyer’s absence, KL Rahul batted at number four and did well. While he scored an unbeaten century against Pakistan, he followed it up with a fighting 39-run knock against Sri Lanka in tough conditions. It would be interesting to see how the team management accommodates both the batsmen in the playing eleven.

Meanwhile, India have already booked their place in the final. The Rohit Sharma-led side will take on either Sri Lanka or Pakistan in the final on the coming Sunday (September 17).
