Batting great Sunil Gavaskar has backed the 20-year-old batter Tilak Varma‘s inclusion in the 17-man squad of the India National Cricket Team for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023.

On Monday, August 21, the BCCI finally announced India’s squad for Asia Cup. The continental tournament will commence on Wednesday, August 30, and the summit clash will be held on Sunday, September 17.

One of the biggest news coming out of the squad selection was the ODI call-up of Tilak, who has played a handful of T20I games. The 20-year-old recently made his debut in the T20I series against West Indies and has played just 7 games so far.

Tilak showed great temperament in the series against West Indies and finished as the leading run-getter for India with 173 runs in his bag. However, he has failed miserably in the ongoing three-match T20I series against Ireland as he has registered scores of 0 and 1.

A couple of failures don’t matter – Sunil Gavaskar on Tilak Varma

Speaking on India Today, Sunil Gavaskar said that Tilak’s selection is a good call as the batter has done enough in the opportunities he has been presented with. The legendary batter also said that a couple of failures in T20 cricket don’t really matter.

“(On Tilak Varma) Very good because the man has done enough in the matches that he’s played, he’s shown what he’s capable of. Yes, against Ireland, a couple of failures don’t matter.”

“Everybody in a T20 game is not gonna be scoring you 40-50 and more. Don’t forget there was a rain threat in the opening game, so you’ve to go, look at the DLS factor, so look to score runs quickly. These are the things, you could’ve taken into account.”

Asia Cup 2023 is set to be played in the One Day International (ODI) format this time around and it will help the teams to prepare for the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which will be hosted by India.
