The Indian senior men’s selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, is expected to finalize the squad for the Asia Cup on 19 August. According to a recent Cricbuzz report, Indian Test captain Shubman Gill and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj might be excluded from the T20I squad for the upcoming tournament.
Shubman Gill scored over 750 runs in the recent England Test series, making him India’s second-highest run-scorer in a single series behind Sunil Gavaskar. On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj finished as the highest wicket-taker among Indian bowlers. He was the only Indian fast bowler to play in all five matches.
Shubman Gill Expected to Be Left Out of India’s Asia Cup T20I Squad
Team India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad is expected to be announced in Mumbai on August 19. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are likely to retain their roles as first-choice openers. Shubman Gill missed the previous T20 World Cup and India’s recent home series against England.
According to Cricbuzz, Gill is behind in the race for a backup opener spot. Yashasvi Jaiswal is considered a leading contender for the third-opening role, with selectors backing openers they have invested in so far.
Gill would need support from coach Gautam Gambhir to secure a spot. Either Jaiswal or Gill could be picked for the backup opener slot for the tournament. Jaiswal has the advantage, but neither may be selected.
Shubman Gill Last Played for India in T20Is During the July 2024 Sri Lanka Series
Shubman Gill made his T20I debut for India in January 2023 against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The 25-year-old batter has scored 578 runs in 21 matches at an average of 30.42 with a strike rate of 139.27, including one century and three fifties.
Gill scored an unbeaten 126 off 63 balls, including 12 fours and seven sixes, against New Zealand in February 2023. He last played a T20I match in July 2024 against Sri Lanka.
The right-handed batter was not included for the series against Bangladesh, South Africa, and England. However, he was the fourth-highest run-scorer with 650 runs, behind Sai Sudharsan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Virat Kohli.
Mohammed Siraj Set to Miss Out on Asia Cup Squad Despite Fine Form
The report added that Jasprit Bumrah is expected to lead Team India’s pace attack. Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana are likely to be the other pacers, with Hardik Pandya serving as the pace-bowling all-rounder.
Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, and vice-captain Axar Patel are expected to feature. Washington Sundar is also in the selection radar for the tournament.
Mohammed Siraj is unlikely to be picked in the squad. Following the Asia Cup, India will host a Test series against the West Indies, starting on October 2. Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami is also unlikely to be considered.
Suryakumar Yadav has successfully cleared his fitness test and will captain India in the Asia Cup, which begins on September 9. India will open their campaign against the United Arab Emirates at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 10.
