The Cricket Association of Bengal has finally reached a decision and suspended its joint secretary, Debabrata Das, due to allegations of financial misconduct just before the Asia Cup 2025. The old hat of CAB is accused of taking a bribe in exchange for promising aspiring cricketers a place in the Bengal Team.

Cricket Association of Bengal has recently undergone massive internal turbulence as two of the seniormost members of the board, Joint Secretary Debabrata Das and Treasurer Prabir Chakraborty, have been accused of financial irregularity and misuse of powers within the board's activities.

The joint secretary was issued a show cause notice last week by the CAB after being accused of withholding nearly INR 7 lakh in revenue from the association. The CAB Apex Council asked Das to clear all dues within 15 days.

CAB suspends Joint Secretary ahead of Asia Cup 2025

Joint Secretary Debabrata Das is a prominent figure in the Bengal Cricket circuit, as a result of which the CAB has been left shattered by a huge financial misconduct allegation against CAB officials.

Following the accusations of financial misconduct, Das has been suspended by the CAB and has been barred from all CAB activities and positions for 6 months. The investigation initiated by the Bengal Cricket Board's Apex Council was to look into the claims of misusing CAB resources and also taking bribes to promise players chances in the Bengal squad.

In a further measure, the CAB has decided to suspend funding for the Town Club, which is chaired by Das. The controversy surrounding Das is not new; the first time marked a public spat with former Bengal wicket-keeper batter Wriddhiman Saha, accusing him of questioning his commitment to the Team.

Debabrata Das accused of accepting bribes to influence Team selections

The senior member of the CAB, Debabrata Das, has been accused of accepting money from players in exchange for promises of paving their way into the Bengal State team or to other CAB-affiliated clubs.

Another shocking claim against the old hat has been that he misused CAB resources by authorising Town Club players' food bills and using CAB canteen expenditure to route those bills through.

The Aditya School of Sports had filed a complaint against the CAB Joint Secretary, accusing him of accepting 4 lakh rupees in return for a CAB Club affiliation, as per India Today reports.

Some other accusations include that he probably used to force players to represent the Town Club, offering verbal assurances of Bengal Team selections in the future. The CAB has stated that the investigation will reach a conclusion by the end of these 6 months of suspension, and further decisions will then be made based on the findings.

CAB official accused of Conflict of Interest

Alongside the accusation of Joint Secretary Das, a controversy had also grown surrounding CAB Treasurer Prabir Chakraborty, who has been accused of a conflict of interest.

The CAB was informed of a formal complaint filed by Wari Club, and the Apex Council has, in turn, turned it back to the Ombudsman for a deep-rooted formal investigation. He has also been asked to submit a utilization certificate that contains details on the expenditure of CAB funds.
