Some great news for Indian Cricket fans: skipper Suryakumar Yadav's comeback is perfectly on track, as he has resumed training in the nets and has confirmed his return for the Asia Cup 2025.
Ever since the end of the IPL and the Mumbai T20 League, the Indian T20I skipper has struggled, as he had to undergo surgery for a sports hernia in Munich. After the surgery, he was under rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) and was considered doubtful for the Asia Cup 2025 participation.
With the Asia Cup only a month away, the selection committee, headed by Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar, is to announce the Asia Cup squad anytime soon, and it is now likely that Suryakumar will resume his responsibilities as the skipper.
Suryakumar Yadav's recovery on track ahead of the Asia Cup 2025
As per reports from RevSportz, Surya has resumed his training in the nets, and it is just a matter of time before he starts the final phase of his recovery and gets a go-ahead from the BCCI.
“He is taking it week by week,” a RevSportz source close to developments said. “It is now time to start high-intensity fielding drills and high-speed running. That will happen starting today.”
Suryakumar's return not only fixes the Indian team's captaincy woes but also solves their dilemma for a middle-order batter, as SKY is likely to resume his role as the no. 4 batter, since that is the position where he loves to bat. However, some reconsideration could also be made after he recently had his most successful IPL season, batting at no. 3 times for the Mumbai Indians.
So far as per reports, Surya's recovery is in full swing, as he has followed and implemented a well-structured recovery plan. “It is looking good. There have been no issues thus far, and things are on track,” the RevSportz source confirmed.
Captain Shubman Gill's hopes shattered in white-ball cricket
Shubman Gill has been an absolute superstar for India in the Test format, as a result of which he has been reconsidered for a return to the shortest format of the game. However, other than the England series, the three successful IPL seasons also stand as a firm reason for opposing him being overlooked.
However, other than just his return, Shubman Gill was likely considered as the skipper for the side under the uncertainty prevailing over Suryakumar Yadav's return ahead of the Asia Cup 2025. Now the dream remains far from the opening batter.
As per reports from Indian media sources, Gill has not been overlooked as an option for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee.
Gill cited as Rohit Sharma's successor in ODIs
Keeping aside the Asia Cup 2025, the BCCI is under immense pressure to make another crucial decision revolving around India's captaincy in the longer white-ball format. The BCCI is also to make a formal decision on the careers of veteran cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
However, as per reports again, the BCCI is considering prioritizing only the Asia Cup 2025 and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 as of now and has no plans to foresee any plans for the ODIs.
However, it has been clear that there is a huge uncertainty looming over the two veterans' availability to play the 2027 ICC World Cup due to age as well as fitness concerns; however, there has been no worry about their batting form. Hence, India is considering Shubman Gill in a leadership role, seeking the 2027 CWC plans in their mind.
