Afghanistan opener Mohammad Shahzad was dismissed in a controversial manner during the ongoing match against India in the final of the ongoing Asian Games 2023. India and Afghanistan are presently involved in the gold medal clash. The winner of the game will clinch a historic gold while the runners-up will walk away with the silver medal.
India captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and opted to field first. Afghanistan, who defeated Pakistan in the semifinal, failed to make a good start with the bat. All-rounder Shivam Dube dismissed opener Zubaid Akbari for 5 runs in just the second over to give India the early breakthrough.
The onus was on senior batsman Mohammad Shahzad to steer his side to a good total. However, the wicketkeeper-batsman could last only 6 balls before being sent back by Arshdeep Singh in the third over. And he was not at all happy with the umpire’s decision to adjudge him caught behind.
On the fifth ball of the third over, Mohammad Shahzad backed away to make room for himself. Arshdeep, however, foiled his plans as he followed the Afghanistan opener with his delivery. Cramped for the room, Mohammad Shahzad tried to steer the ball towards the third man but failed and ended up edging it behind the stumps to the wicketkeeper.
The Indian fielders went up in unison for a caught behind and the on-field umpire duly obliged. Mohammad Shahzad, however, was not at all happy with the decision and did not shy away from venting his frustration. He was quite assured that the ball had brushed either the forearm or the bicep as he walked off the field disappointed.
