After a string of poor performances, Tilak Varma, on Friday (October 8), roared back to form with a whirlwind fifty against Bangladesh in the semi-final of the ongoing Asian Games 2023.
The left-handed batsman announced his arrival in international cricket in style. He made his debut during the T20I series against West Indies and finished the five-match series as India’s highest run-scorer. He was also a part of the three-match T20I series in Ireland and earned his maiden ODI call-up for the Asia Cup.
Tilak Varma, however, failed to do well in Ireland, registering scores of 0 and 1 in two outings. In the Asia Cup last month, he made his ODI debut against Bangladesh but failed to do well and was out for just 5 runs. His poor performance continued in India’s first game of the Asian Games too. The Hyderabad star could manage to score only 2 runs against Nepal in the quarterfinal.
Tilak Varma roars back to form:
Just as the critics were gearing up to take shots at Tilak Varma, the highly-rated batsman came up with a stunning performance against Bangladesh. He scored a stunning fifty to help India thrash Bangladesh by nine wickets and storm into the final.
Asked to bat first, Bangladesh could only manage to post a modest total of 96 for 9 in the allotted 20 overs. Sai Kishore picked up three wickets while Washington Sundar picked up two. In reply, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal’s wicket for a duck before Tilak Varma and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad shared an unbeaten stand of 97 runs to take India home.
Gaikwad remained unbeaten on 40 while Varma smashed 55 runs off just 26 balls with the help of two fours and six sixes. And as soon as he hit his sixth six to reach his fifty, he came up with a special celebration. After completing his second T20I fifty, the southpaw lifted his shirt to show the tattoo of his parents and dedicated his celebration to them along with Rohit Sharma’s daughter Samaira Sharma.
“The celebration for my mom; I was a bit down in the last few games; I included my best friend ‘Samaira’ in that as well,” said Tilak Varma.
A stroke-filled half-century for Tilak Varma & a heart-warming celebration for his mom follows ♥️
