Former England bowler Steve Harmison praised Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for his outstanding batting performance against Afghanistan. Steve Harmison expressed that he found it challenging to describe the greatness of Glenn Maxwell’s historic performance.
Glenn Maxwell scored a match-winning double-century against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, November 7. He scored an unbeaten 201 runs off 128 deliveries, including 21 boundaries and 10 sixes, single-handedly guiding his team to victory.
Words, Superlatives Can’t Do Justice – Steve Harmison
In a conversation with ESPNCricinfo, Steve Harmison mentioned that words and superlatives fall short in describing Glenn Maxwell’s incredible innings. Harmison acknowledged that if Afghanistan had held onto their catches, the outcome might have been different.
“Words, superlatives can’t do justice what Glenn Maxwell has just done. We were sitting in this chair from the 25th over, expecting the game to finish. And if Afghanistan took their catches, it might have been. But, I tell you what, that’s up there,” Harmison told ESPNCricinfo.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman put down a straightforward catch at the short fine leg off Noor Ahmad’s bowling when Maxwell was on 33. Hashmatullah Shahidi missed a tough opportunity. Maxwell also survived a close leg-before decision, with the ball just missing the stumps.
Glenn Maxwell Did Is Right Up There – Steve Harmison
Steve Harmison described Maxwell’s innings as “remarkable” and believed it might be unmatched in 50-over World Cup history. Harmison drew comparisons with England all-rounder Ben Stokes’ heroic innings at Headingley.
“I didn’t think I’d witness anything as good, powerful, as grit, determination … when you’re playing for your country, what I witnessed when Ben Stokes did what he did at Headingley, I tell you what, what Maxwell did is right up there.”
“To bat on one leg for probably two thirds of that innings, hats off. That’s just a remarkable innings and I don’t think in 50-over WC history that innings will ever be beaten.”
Australia won a match despite being in the challenging situation of 91/7. Maxwell added an unbeaten 202-run eighth-wicket stand with skipper Pat Cummins, who scored 12 runs off 68 deliveries. Maxwell received physiotherapy attention several times during his innings.
