Sri Lanka batting great Kumar Sangakkara has made a massive prediction about the scoreline of Ashes 2023 in the middle of the fourth Test between England and Australia, which is currently underway at Old Trafford in Manchester.
Australia currently lead the series 2-1 after registering back-to-back wins in the first two Tests at Edgbaston and Lord’s. England bounced back strong to seal the win in the Headingley Test and are in a dominant position in the Manchester Test, thanks to Zak Crawley’s stunning 189 and Joe Root’s brilliant 84 in the first innings.
Meanwhile, Kumar Sangakkara has made a huge prediction, saying that England would go on to clinch the Ashes 2023 series 3-2 if they emerge victorious in the fourth Test. Speaking on Sky Sports Cricket’s Ashes Podcast, Kumar Sangakkara said:
“If England wins this Test then they are going to take the Ashes 3-2.”
Batting first in the Manchester Test, the Aussies posted 317 on the board before being bundled out. When England came to bat, they lost Ben Duckett early on in the innings, but Zak Crawley stitched up sensational partnerships with Moeen Ali and Joe Root to bring the Three Lions back into the game. At Stumps on Day 2, England were at 384/4 in 72.0 overs.
With the ball, it’s been a long time since I have seen the Australians this perplexed – Kumar Sangakkara
Kumar Sangakkara further said that Australia looked perplexed on Day 2 after the assault from the English batters and it looked like they were out of ideas.
“With the ball, it’s been a long time since I have seen the Australians this perplexed on the field. Not knowing what to do, what fields to set and then bowling completely different from the fields set. It’s really affected them,” he said.
“If this goes England’s way, three days before the next Test, the memories and scars will stay. England have recognized when they are ahead and they have accelerated and taken the game away.”
Kumar Sangakkara further talked about the possible declaration score of England on Day 3.
“Scoring 150-160 in a session is not impossible. 200 or a bit more than that then you might think of having a dab at Australia. But it all depends on the weather. If Saturday is washed out and tomorrow (Friday) is weather-marred, you might want to put Australia in by Lunch on Sunday,” he said.
