Nathan Lyon was ruled out of the Ashes series after he injured his calf in the second Test at Lord’s. Todd Murphy replaced him in the third Test at Headingley before he was dropped again from the fourth Test in Manchester.
Nathan Lyon was incidentally playing his 100th Test match when he did his calf on day 2 of the Lord’s Test. He suffered a calf problem while fielding a shot from England’s Ben Duckett, causing him to hold his calf muscle in apparent pain. He was fielding on the boundary when he pulled his calf muscle in his left leg while running to stop the ball. Lyon had to leave the field immediately, assisted by a team doctor.
The Australian off-spinner flew out of England earlier this week and will be rehabilitating ahead of the domestic season at home. Lyon was on 496 Test wickets and four short of the 500 mark when he was ruled out of the series. He braved his injury and batted for 13 balls in Australia’s second innings adding 15 runs for the last wicket.

Steve Waugh Talks About His Conversation With Nathan Lyon
Meanwhile, former Australian skipper Steve Waugh said that persuaded Lyon to stay back for the final Test at The Oval starting on July 27.
“I actually sent Nathan Lyon a message after he did his calf,” Waugh said on SENQ Breakfast.
“I said, ‘Mate, don’t give up on it, you’ve got 18 days, you might be able to get back for the last Test match But obviously being a bowler it’s harder than a batsman,” Waugh further added.

Waugh himself played through an injury in the 2001 Ashes series and scored 157* against England at The Oval. Speaking about the same, Waugh said that players these days do not play with injuries anymore.
“I sort of bluffed my way through that last Test match and did it more on willpower and knowing that I didn’t have another Test match for about six weeks after,” Waugh said.
“Back in our era we had more opportunity to play through injury. The physio trusted you and knew what your pain tolerance was and what you could get through,” he concluded saying.
