Stuart Broad announced his retirement from international cricket after Ashes 2023. Just before the final two days of AUS vs ENG 5th Test, Stuart Broad announced that he will retire after the series. AUS vs ENG: Stuart Broad Timed His Retirement Perfectly- Nasser Hussain
While speaking on The ICC Review, cricketer-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain was asked if Stuart Broad retired a little early. Hussain thinks that the England pacer has timed his retirement perfectly.
“I think retirement is, you’d want people to ask, ‘Why not a little bit more?’ You retire when people are saying, ‘Why are you retiring? rather than ‘Why not?’
When people start saying that you should be retiring, then you’ve probably gone a bit too far. So I think he’s timed it perfectly. Two days to go, came down to us at Sky (Sports) and said, ‘Yep, I’m done’. And then he had two days”, the 55-year-0ld said.
Nasser Hussain, who played 96 Tests and 88 ODIs for England, feels Stuart Broad has always been a winner. He highlighted how Broad tried his best efforts to win his final game.
“But the one thing with Stuart, you know, because he announced his retirement, it’s not like I’m done, I’m checking out. You know Stuart Broad is going to want to win. He’s always been a winner,” Hussain further added.
Hussain also highlighted Broad’s astonishing finish in Ashes 2023. Broad hit the last ball he faced for a six and also picked a wicket on his final ball.
“Last ball he faces in Test cricket, he hits out of the ground for a six. Last ball he bowls in Test cricket, he gets Carey out. Last Ashes… he’s born for Ashes cricket. And he wins his last Ashes Test. It was unbelievable scenes at The Oval,” said Hussain, who represented England from 1990 to 2003.
Broad also showcased a magnificent form in Ashes 2023. Across 5 games, the right-arm pacer hunted 22 scalps to finish as the leading wicket-taker for England in the series.
With 847 wickets in his international cricket, he is one of the leading wicket-takers in the history of cricket. Broad halted his ODI and T20I career after 2016 and only played Tests.
