Ben Stokes’ hopes of leading England to a memorable Ashes series win were shattered by rain as the fourth Test against Australia ended in a draw due to rain.
England had Australia firmly on the backfoot for the first three days of the Test in Manchester before rain washed out the majority of the fourth day and the entire fifth day. After suffering two close losses in the first two Tests, England bounced back by winning the third Test to keep the series alive.
The hosts were in the driver’s seat in the fourth Test too and were looking destined to win the game before persistent rain ended their dreams. Having taken a massive 275-run lead in the first innings, England were 5 wickets away from clinching a series-leveling win.
The draw means England have not reclaimed the urn since losing it during the 2017/18 season. England’s last Ashes series win came way back in 2015. They now need to win the last Test to avoid a series defeat against Australia. The visitors have not won an away Ashes series since 2001. A draw in the upcoming Test will be more than enough for Pat Cummins & Co. to register a famous series win.
Ben Stokes shuts down journalist:
Following the draw, the critics have been pointing out England’s failure to win any of the first two Tests as one of the reasons behind their failure to reclaim the urn. The Ben Stokes-led side lost the first Test by two wickets before suffering a 43-run defeat in the second game.
And an English journalist also felt the same as he asked the same question to Ben Stokes during the post-match press conference. The reporter asked the England captain whether going 0-2 down in the series was a bigger “disappointment” for the team than the drawn fourth Test.
In reply, Ben Stokes decided against giving any explanation and straightaway said: “No, not really.”
