Australian head coach Andrew McDonald spoke about the talks related to Pat Cummins stepping down as the Test captain. He said that it’s fair to criticize the team for some poor tactics but talks of the captain’s resignation would be far-fetched.
Australia have retained the Ashes after rain played a spoilsport and washed away the Manchester Test. They won two first two games and then faced a loss in the third game at Headingley. The fourth Test of the series was horrible for them as they were completely dominated but rain saved them and the trophy went in their favour.
Despite Australia retaining the Ashes, skipper Pat Cummins has faced a lot of criticism for his leadership and there have been many calls about him taking a backstep. It’s fair to say that as a captain the fast bowler has struggled in the series and at times has looked clueless as well.

In the Manchester Test when England batters in particular Zak Crawley were taking Australian bowlers to the cleaners, Pat Cummins looked didn’t have any plans. He looked under a lot of pressure and following his poor show, former cricketer Darren Berry said that the pacer would step down after the series gets over.
Reacting to Darren Berry’s comments, Australian head coach Andrew McDonald said that captaincy is all about living and dying in the world of tactics and touted his comments as most interesting. Speaking to reporters, he said:
“What I would say is leadership takes on all different shapes and forms and we’re living and dying in the world of tactics only. I think it’s fair and reasonable to critique some of the execution and tactics that we implemented but to go as far as suggesting that the captain resigns post-series, I think it would be far-fetched.”

Ashes 2023: There are opinions that we respect and there’s opinions that we don’t – Andrew McDonald on talks related to Pat Cummins’s captaincy
Andrew McDonald further went on to say that they all are working for Australia and to blame Pat Cummins for poor tactics is not fair. He explained:
“There’s opinions that we respect and there’s opinions that we don’t. We’re all working on the Australian cricket team together. It should never really come down to Pat as an individual but unfortunately, as a captain, sometimes you wear that.”
The fifth and final Test of Ashes 2023 will be played from 27th July at The Oval in London.
