Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has always been outspoken about the communal issues he has faced in his own country. The ex-leg-spinner is only the second Hindu to play for the Pakistan cricket team.
Time and again, he has opened up on the discrimination he has faced in the country as well as in the Pakistan team because of his religious beliefs. And the former cricketer has now alleged that he was a victim of relentless communal taunts from fellow players – on and off the field.
Religion has become a major talking point after the recent World Cup match between India and Pakistan. The arch-rivals locked horns against each other at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday (October 14). The Pakistani media has alleged that the Pakistan team was targeted with religious chants by the fans during the game.
A viral clip also shows Mohammad Rizwan facing a hostile group of fans bombarding him with religious chants while he was on his way to the dressing room after his dismissal. The wicketkeeper-batsman is also facing legal troubles for offering Namaz on the playing field during the game against the Netherlands in Hyderabad.
Danish Kaneria’s shocking revelation:
With religion becoming a major talking point following the India vs Pakistan clash, Danish Kaneria has alleged that he faced discrimination throughout his playing career. To make his point, the former spinner posted a clip on X a match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in 2014.
In the clip, former Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad could be seen trying to convert ex-Sri Lanka batter Tillakaratne Dilshan by telling him that he would go “straight to heaven” if he converted to Islam.
“If you non-Muslim and you turn Muslim, no matter whatever you do in life… straight to heaven,” Shehzad told Dilshan. In reply, Dilshan was seen telling the Pakistan batter something before the latter said: “Then be ready for the fire.”
Sharing the video, Danish Kaneria wrote: “Be it the dressing room, the playground or the dining table, this happened to me every day.”
