Former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram expressed disappointment over the crushing defeat of the Babar Azam-led team against India in the ICC World Cup 2023. Wasim Akram pointed out the players’ poor fitness levels as a potential cause for their humiliating defeat.

The Babar Azam-led team failed to put up a strong fight against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday, October 14. The Men in Green scored just 191 runs after being asked to bat first. In response, Team India chased down the target with more than 19 overs to spare.

A Professional Cricketer Should Undergo A Fitness Test – Wasim Akram

While speaking on a local sports channel, Wasim Akram emphasized the importance of conducting regular fitness tests for cricket players, mentioning Misbah-ul-Haq’s tenure as head coach.

“I am concerned about the fitness of these players. Now there is no fitness test. When Misbah was the coach and selector, he used to get the Yo-Yo Test and other tests done. A professional cricketer should undergo a fitness test at least once in a month. If you won’t do this, you will face this (defeat vs India),” Wasim Akram told a Pakistan TV show.

Misbah-ul-Haq signed a three-year contract as the head coach of Pakistan’s men’s team after their disappointing 2019 World Cup performance. However, he decided to resign from the position when Ramiz Raja assumed the role of PCB chairman in September 2021.

PCB Has Seen Three Chairmen In The Last 3 years – Wasim Akram

Wasim Akram pointed out the frequent changes in leadership within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as a potential factor contributing to the team’s performance issues.

“PCB has seen three chairmen in the last 3 years. This created a scare among the team members and management about whether they would be part of the next series or not. From 154 for 2 and then 191 all out was really, really disappointing,” the former Pakistan captain said.

The Babar Azam-led team will lock horns with Pat Cummins-led Australia in their fourth match of the tournament at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday, October 20.
