Australia have received a huge boost ahead of their crucial World Cup clash against South Africa. Their star allrounder Marcus Stoinis is available for selection after missing the tournament opener against India in Chennai on Sunday (October 8).

In the all-rounder’s absence, Australia lost the game by 6 wickets. Batting first, Australia were all out for just 199 after an inexplicable middle-order collapse. With the ball, they began well and had India reeling at 2 for 3 before the fifties from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul powered the hosts to an impressive win.

Australia definitely missed Marcus Stoinis’ experience during the collapse and would be delighted with his availability for the must-win clash against the Proteas. The allrounder missed the game against India due to the hamstring injury he had picked up in the first ODI against the same opponent in Mohali last month.

In his absence, Australia played Cameron Green but the allrounder failed to do well. He scored 8 runs and went wicketless from two overs. Green is likely to make way for his experienced teammate in the upcoming game against South Africa.

Marcus Stoinis set to play against Australia:

A couple of days before the game against South Africa, Glenn Maxwell has confirmed that Marcus Stoinis has been cleared to play the upcoming game. Maxwell also hoped that his teammate would enjoy the outing in Lucknow, his IPL home ground.

“He’s back available for selection. I think he was pretty touch and go for that first game. And I think with the travel days and the timings of the training session, he probably only missed the first game by maybe a day,” Maxwell was quoted as saying by Code Sports.

“I think his big day was the day before the game anyway, where I think it just pissed down with rain anyway so it ruined his training session. I think he’ll be good to go. This is his home ground in the IPL so he’ll be enjoying hopefully being back out there in a couple of days time,” he added.

Speaking further, Maxwell said Marcus Stoinis was frustrated over not being able to play against India and is excited to make his bow in the ongoing competition.

“I’ve been speaking to him a fair bit being close mates and he says he feels ready to go and he’s excited and frustrated that he obviously couldn’t be out there for the first game,” Maxwell said.

“He’s a big energy for our team and someone who obviously is a matchwinner and someone you need in these types of tournaments,” he added.
