Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson was all praise for youngster Cameron Green in a recent interview with SENQ. Watson hailed Green as one of the most technically gifted batters in the world at the moment and stated that he just needs to find the right mental environment and game plan to well and truly showcase his quality.
Cameron Green was a part of the Australian team that hosted West Indies for a 2-match series in Adelaide and the Gabba. He was recalled to the red-ball side for the first time since last year’s Ashes edition in England where the Aussies retained the Ashes Urn following a breathtaking 5-match series which remained a 2-2 draw.
The 24-year-old who is still in his early days, has shown a lot of potential for the national team and has successfully established him as a big hitter. Although he is yet to become a regular feature for his national side due to the presence of another proven power hitter, Mitchell Marsh.
Cameron Green has also battled a lot with injuries in his career. He was plagued with stress fracture injuries quite a lot in his initial years and after becoming a national team player, Green had endured a broken finger during a Test match against South Africa at the MCG in December 2022.
He made his return to Test cricket 3 months later through Australia’s 4-match Border-Gavaskar trophy Test series in India, appearing for the 3rd and 4th Tests in Indore and Ahmedabad where he played out a knock of 114. Then after playing the Ashes, Green found himself out of the Test team before being integrated to the side for the West Indies series this month.
Cameron Green was touted to replace David Warner in the opening slot before Steve Smith paired alongside Usman Khawaja and Green slotted in at number 4, which was Smith’s original position in Tests. He has done almost everything right but is yet to become a priority for the Baggy Greens and to become so, former all-rounder Shane Watson has come up with a suggestion for him.
“Cameron Green is one of the most gifted and highly skilled batters that we’ve got in the country as a young batter for sure. He’s just had to find the right method and the right mental environment for him to be able to just let that incredible skill shine that’s so deeply ingrained in him.” – Watson said.
Watson Feels Cameron Green Will Be A Key Player For Australia In The Long Run
Shane Watson had a tremendous cricketing career for Australia where he has won numerous ICC trophies as the senior player. Watson has served them in every possible way, as an opener, as a middle-order batter, as a finisher, and has also been very effective with the ball.
Watson knows what type of ingredients an all-rounder requires to become as successful as him and he stated that Cameron Green is just implementing a particular game plan away from becoming Australia’s main all-rounder in the future.
“We’ve seen it when he’s had that freedom of mind at certain times in his Test career. But also in the shorter formats in T20 and One Day cricket when he’s had that freedom and understanding how to create that right mental environment. He’s just got such incredible skills, it was always just going to be a matter of time before.”
“Once he just continues to implement that plan every single time, he really is going to put in some incredibly important performances over a long period of time for Australia.” – Watson concluded.
