Shamar Joseph enjoyed a dream outing on his Test debut but Australia still managed to end day one of the first AUS vs WI Test on top at the Adelaide Oval. The hosts bowled out West Indies for a modest total of 188 before ending the day on 59 for 2.
AUS vs WI: Australia innings:
A new chapter unfolded for Australia when Steve Smith opened the innings alongside Usman Khawaja. The former Australia captain opened the innings for the very first time in his Test career after he was confirmed as retired David Warner’s replacement. And while all eyes were on Smith, he could not deliver on his debut as Test opener.
The momentum was with Australia after their bowlers’ fine display and the onus was on the openers to give the team a good start. Alzarri Joseph could have dismissed Usman Khawaja in the very second over after making him edge one behind the stumps but wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva failed to hold on to the catch.

Khawaja was batting on 3 at that time and went on to remain unbeaten on 30 at stumps. West Indies will be hoping that the drop does not prove too costly for them. Unlike Khawaja, Smith was not lucky as he had to depart for 12 after edging Shamar Joseph’s very first delivery in Test cricket to Justin Greaves at third slip.

Joseph was not done yet as he struck again to dismiss Marnus Labuschagne for 10 to reduce Australia to 45 for 2. Khawaja and Cameron Green then successfully navigated through the remaining overs in the day.
AUS vs WI: West Indies innings:
Earlier in the game, a fine cameo from debutant Joseph helped West Indies post 188. Asked to bat first, the tourists kept losing wickets at regular intervals right from the start. Captain Pat Cummins dismissed both the openers, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Kraigg Brathwaite to leave West Indies reeling at 27 for 2.
Josh Hazlewood then dismissed Alick Athanaze for 13 to become the 11th Australian to reach 250 Test wickets. It was followed by a 46-run stand between Kirk McKenzie and Kavem Hodge before the latter’s dismissal opened the floodgates. McKenzie scored 50 runs and was dismissed by Hazlewood to leave his side reeling at 107 for 5.
In no time, the visitors found themselves 9 down for just 133 runs. The 150-run mark was looking like a distant dream at that stage but a fine stand of 55 runs between Joseph and Kemar Roach helped them post 188. Joseph was the last wicket to fall after scoring 33 while Roach remained unbeaten on 17. For Australia, Cummins and Hazlewood picked up 4 wickets apiece.
